Lesson 15

Memory verse: “And let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them.” Exodus 25:8 We have been learning about the articles of furniture in the sanctuary or tabernacle. The work done in the first apartment or the Holy Place was known as the ‘Daily Service’. This lesson we will study the second apartment or the Most Holy Place. In it there is only one article of furniture, The Ark. The work in the apartment was known as, ‘The Yearly Service’ which was called, “The Day of Atonement”.

1. Out of all the Ceremonial System, this day was the most solemn. What took place? Leviticus 16:30 “For on that day shall the make an __________ for you, to _________ you, that ye may be clean from all your ________ before the LORD.” We know that the daily service was performed at the Alter of Burnt Offering. The priest took some of the blood into the Holy Place and sprinkled it before the veil. Here it remained until the Day of Atonement when the sanctuary was cleansed. “Important truths concerning the atonement are taught by the typical service. A substitute was accepted in the sinner’s stead; but the sin was not canceled by the blood of the victim. A means was thus provided by which it was transferred to the sanctuary. By the offering of blood the sinner acknowledged the authority of the law, confessed his guilt in transgression, and expressed his desire for pardon through faith in a Redeemer to come; but he was not yet entirely released from the condemnation of the law. On the Day of Atonement the high priest, having taken an offering from the congregation, went into the most holy place with the blood of this offering, and sprinkled it upon the mercy seat, directly over the law, to make satisfaction for its claims. Then, in his character of mediator, he took the sins upon himself and bore them from the sanctuary. Placing his hands upon the head of the scapegoat, he confessed over him all these sins, thus in figure transferring them from himself to the goat. The goat then bore them away, and they were regarded as forever separated from the people.” Great Controversy Pg.420

2. What did each one in the camp of Israel do on that day? Numbers 29:7 “And ye shall have on the tenth day of this seventh month an holy convocation; and ye shall _________ your _________: ye shall not do any work therein:” This was known as “The Day of Atonement” or the Day of Judgment.

3. What happened if they did not afflict their soul? Leviticus 23:29 “For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be ______ ______ from _________ his _________. ““Every man was to afflict his soul while the work of atonement was going forward. All business was laid aside, and the whole congregation of Israel spent the day in solemn humiliation before God, with prayer, fasting, and deep searching of heart.” Patriarchs and Prophets Pg. 355 4. What was the special work they needed to do? Read Leviticus 16:31 — 34. “It shall he a Sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever. And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest’s office in his father’s stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments: And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar, and he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation. And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to _________ an _________ for the children of Israel for all their _________ once a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.” Verse 34 “And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to ________ an ______________ for the children of Israel for all their _________ once a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.” This we need to do each day, to be ready why Christ comes. 2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be _______ or __________.“ Read Hebrews 9:7 “But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

5. The Most Holy was entered only once a year. Who was allowed to enter this apartment? Leviticus 16:3 “Thus shall ___________ come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering:” We know that Aaron was the High Priest. Only the High Priest was ever to go in the Most Holy Place, where the Ark was.

6. He was given a warning, that all the Lord told him to do, was to be done, as the Lord had said. What would happen if he didn’t do as the Lord had said? Leviticus 16:2. “And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he _______ not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

7. Why was it so important that everything be right, before he went in? Who was to be there? Look at the last text again. Leviticus 16:2. “And the _______ _______ unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for ____ will ________ in the _________ upon the mercy seat.” He was going to meet with the Lord, God. “The Day of Atonement” represented “The Day of Judgment” when Christ shall return, to judge the world.

8. Read Leviticus 16: 11 – 14. The High Priest was to offer the bullock for his own purification. Leviticus 16:6 “And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which is for ___________, and make an atonement for ___________, and for his ________.”

9. On this day the High Priest was to receive what from the congregation? Leviticus 16:5 “And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel ________ _________ of the _________ for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.”

10. Aaron would cast lots upon the two goats. Why was this done? Leviticus 16:8 “And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; ____ ________ for the ________, and the _______________ for the ____________.” “The sin offering pointed to Christ as the sacrifice, the High Priest represented Christ as a Mediator. The scapegoat typified Satan, the author of sin.” Great Controversy Pg. 422

11. The goat was the Lord’s, what was done with it? Leviticus 16:9 “And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD’S lot fell, and offer him for a _________ ____________.”

12. What happened to the other goat or the scapegoat? Leviticus 16:10 “But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be ___________ ____________________ the ___________, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.” The sins that had been accumulating all year in the sanctuary were placed on the scapegoat and he was lead into the wilderness, and turned loose. This represents the sins at the end of the world, that will be placed on Satan. He will bear the sins of those who have confessed them and are saved. “Now the event takes place foreshadowed in the last solemn service of the Day of Atonement. When the ministration in the holy of holies had been completed, and the sins of Israel had been removed from the sanctuary by virtue of the blood of the sin offering, then the scapegoat was presented alive before the Lord; and in the presence of the congregation the high priest confessed over him “all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat.” Leviticus 16:21 In like manner, when the work of atonement in the heavenly sanctuary has been completed, then in the presence of God and heavenly angels and the hosts of the redeemed the sins of God’s people will be placed upon Satan; he will be declared guilty of all the evil which he has caused them to commit. And as the scapegoat was sent away into a land not inhabited, so Satan will be banished to the desolate earth, an uninhabited and dreary wilderness.” Great Controversy Pg. 658

13. Why was it necessary for the shedding of blood? Leviticus 16:11 “And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the _____ ____ , which is for himself, and shall _________ an _____________ for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself:” Hebrews 9:22 “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and _________ ___________ of ___________ is no ______________”. “The cleansing, both in the typical and in the real service, must be accomplished with blood: in the former, with the blood of animals; in the latter, with the blood of Christ. Paul states, as the reason why this cleansing must be performed with blood, that without shedding of blood is no remission. Remission, or putting away of sin, is the work to be accomplished.” Great Controversy Pg. 417 2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he bath made _______ to ______ _____ who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Jesus will bear the sins of the world until the close of time. He is “The Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world.” John 1:29 “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. In the final cleansing of the universe, sin will be destroyed. Sin will not rise the second time. Satan will be destroyed with the wicked.

The colors used in the sanctuary, had much meaning.

Numbers 15:38-41 The sanctuary has the articles of furniture placed where they were in the setting. The numbers on the chart match the numbers below and tell more about each article.

    1. The Ark of the Covenant – With the tables of the Law inside the Mercy Seat: Just above which is the covering of the Ark, with two Cherubim with out stretched wings. This represented the Throne of God. The Mercy Seat between the covering Cherubim, was the presence of God himself. The Shekinah was a light hovered over the Mercy Seat, between the covering Cherubims. God had said in Exodus 25:8 “Let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.” The Ark of the Covenant was a box overlaid with gold. The cover was called the Mercy Seat. Inside the Ark was the Ten Commandments, on two tables of stone, which were written by God’s finger. They were called, The Law. The Mercy is where all can find Mercy from God.
